Meet 2025 Risk All Star Joselle Bamford of Erickson Senior Living
The average person couldn’t imagine how stressful it would be to manage workers’ compensation claims in a health care setting, not to mention a long-term health care setting.
Joselle Bamford, director of workers’ compensation claims management with Erickson Senior Living, is one of those claims managers to whom society owes a great debt. She worked for an organization that was suffering the financial consequences of spotty return-towork procedures, limited access to quality care and a high claims litigation rate.
The veteran of Broadspire, Ford and General Motors worked with CorVel, its TPA, to build an enterprise-wide return-to-work process tailored to Erickson’s workforce.
She created customized returnto-work templates for various occupations and designed transitional duty assignments to enable faster reintegration of employees into the workplace.
Her ability to innovate while remaining pragmatic led to the creation of a consistent and scalable program that was widely adopted across all Erickson campuses.
To complement her return-to-work strategies, Bamford enhanced Erickson’s managed care capabilities through a dual-pronged approach: expanding on-site care and strengthening CorVel partnerships. Today, 15 of Erickson’s locations are equipped with Employee Health and Wellness Centers staffed by certified registered nurse practitioners.
She also implemented CorVel’s 24/7 nurse line and field case management services, ensuring immediate access to care and faster recovery timelines.
Collaboration with not only CorVel, but the team of executives at Erickson, is vital to the work Bamford does.
“To be instrumental in the leadership team that values collaboration with dedicated team members and partners and embraces innovation that leads to great and improved outcomes is a unique and special experience for me,” Bamford said.
And just look at her results:
- In 2021–2022, 15.76% of claims at Erickson included lost time.
- By 2023–2024, that number dropped to 9.44%. – Pharmacy savings increased from 26% to 36.7%.
- Litigation rate on open claims dropped by 31%, from an average of 31% (2020–2021) to 22% (2022– 2025) and the closing ratio increased from 102.7% (2023) to 113.19% (2025).
Bamford has dedicated her career to helping others. But she credits others with helping her.
“Throughout my many years of growth, as an occupational health nurse in several different companies, I have to credit the strong and passionate nurses and human resource directors who gave me the ‘keys’ of knowledge and confidence to open many unknown doors of opportunity,” Bamford said.
“With that, my path eventually led me to Erickson Senior Living, [where I] currently find wonderful inspiration and continued growth under the amazing guidance of Dr. Julia Shiner, vice president, medical director — employee health and wellbeing,” she added. &
