Emerging Underwriter Overview
What is an Emerging Underwriter?
The Risk & Insurance® Emerging Underwriters recognition program casts an appreciative spotlight on the next generation of underwriting professionals. These are the promising individuals who are shaping the future of the property/casualty, specialty and reinsurance markets.
The rising leaders we will honor are driving innovation, profitability, broker relationships, data-driven decision making and customer-focused underwriting strategies across the industry.
Who is eligible for the award?
Eligible nominee/applicant includes any individual with responsibility for any function within underwriting for their employer with titles (not limited to) such as:
- Underwriter (I, II), etc.
- Risk, Data, Product, Portfolio Analyst
- Junior Underwriter
- Underwriting Technician
- Production Underwriter
- Underwriting Operations Associate
- Underwriting Innovation Analyst
- Underwriting Strategy Analyst
The nominee/applicant must work in Commercial P/C, Specialty lines, E&S, Reinsurance or MGA/MGU.
The nominee/applicant must be 30 years or younger as of February 19, 2027 and have minimum 2 years industry experience (preferred).
Who selects the winners?
Emerging Underwriters are selected by editors at Risk & Insurance® magazine.
What criteria are used to select winners?
Winning applicants are selected based on the compelling nature of their story, professional achievements, and contributions to the underwriting profession. The central question is:
“Does the applicant’s story inform, inspire, and demonstrate the future of underwriting?”
While a compelling story is most important, winners will also exhibit success in one or more of the following areas:
- Demonstrated underwriting excellence and sound risk selection.
- Strong analytical, data-driven, or portfolio management skills.
- Innovation in underwriting processes, technology adoption, or product development.
- Meaningful contributions to broker, agent, and customer relationships.
- Measurable impact on profitability, growth, retention, or operational efficiency.
- Expertise within a specific industry segment or line of business.
- Community involvement, industry engagement, or efforts to advance the insurance profession.
- A passion for solving client challenges and helping businesses manage risk.
- Early-career achievements that distinguish the applicant as an emerging leader within Property/Casualty insurance.
Nomination process
Applications/nominations (referred to below as simply “applications”) are accepted from any source including the underwriter applying or nominations from a colleague, insurer, broker or service provider.
We require an application form to be completed in order to capture profile information. Please provide enough information to give our editors an overview of the accomplishments but don’t feel compelled to write overly long responses. Think concise and factual.
Important Note Regarding Confidentiality: Please avoid including any information in the application or nomination form that you would not be comfortable seeing in print. While we will make every effort to handle sensitive information with care, please be aware that all information provided in the application will be considered on the record unless you explicitly state otherwise.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in protecting both your privacy and the integrity of the process.
Judging process
Once all applications are received, the judging team meets to review the applications, consider interviews, and complete evaluations. Winners are selected.
There is no limit on the number of winners. Each Risk & Insurance® Emerging Underwriter is chosen based on the compelling nature of their story.
Publication
Winners will be announced in the May/June 2027 issue of Risk & Insurance®. The information is also posted on the Risk & Insurance® website, e-newsletter, digital edition and app. A profile highlighting each winner’s accomplishments along with a head-shot will be published.
Award packages
A few weeks after the winners are announced, each winner receives a package with a copy of the print issue, an award plaque and additional information.
