Marsh Broker Wendy Thomas Recognized as a 2021 Workers’ Comp Power Broker
Wendy Thomas, Senior Vice President, Marsh
COVID-19 disrupted companies globally.
In workers’ comp, care was delayed or moved to telehealth environments as non-essential medical procedures were postponed and clinics closed. With care delayed on active claims, it became more important than ever for workers’ comp insureds to close legacy claims to free up funds.
Wendy Thomas has helped her clients close these legacy claims — and saved them money in the process: “This past year has thrown everybody for a loop,” said Diane Norris, director of benefits and insurance for Sbarro LLC. “One thing that I loved about Wendy was she made my life a lot easier with the uneasiness of what was going to be going on with specific claims.”
One client had a number of claims stuck in litigation at the start of the pandemic. Thomas helped it analyze the claims in order to identify the best ones for pursuing closure, enabling the client to find settlements on a number of legacy claims. Another client faced an aging book of workers’ comp claims in need of closures.
To address this problem, Thomas helped it partner with its TPA to create an aggressive strategy for closing claims, resulting in a 44% reduction in outstanding reserves.
Clients praised Thomas’ tenacity and willingness to step in and find solutions when upper management demands answers: “Anytime we have an issue or uncover something that might become an issue, she’s very proactive in researching a potential solution,” said J. Beau VanDyke director of global safety and health for Koppers Inc.
