Insurance coverage hasn’t always lived up to expectations for Erik Wiley. But ever since he began working with Joe Kirksey, Wiley feels his Louisiana farm is well protected.

That’s because Kirksey gives advice he can trust.

“When Joe comes to the table, he has his facts in order,” said Wiley, owner of Paul Miller & Sons Farms, which grows corn, cotton, soybean and grain sorghum. Kirksey recently recommended an increase in the farm’s coverage levels for policies that protect its revenue, Wiley said. They ended up paying out.

“Without his knowledge of the program, we wouldn’t have capitalized on that,” Wiley said. The knowledge comes from Kirksey’s familiarity with the business and its operations, Wiley said. The broker spends time at every farm, analyzing past performance and claims to ensure adequate coverage.

Kirksey also keeps tabs on government policies and legislation that impact agriculture more broadly, his clients said.

The broker is an active member of the legislative committee for the Crop Insurance Professionals Association, and he has participated in a leadership program founded by the American Association of Crop Insurers.

“He’s very in touch with Washington,” said Chris Boughton, owner of Boughton Ag in Mangham, Louisiana.
