Aon Broker Sam Tashima Recognized as a 2026 Captives Power Broker
Sam Tashima, Head of Cyber Risk Consulting & Analytics, North America, Aon
Tech companies that work in young sectors such as social media and artificial intelligence must overcome many hurdles to thrive. One of them is to place insurance programs for which they have little loss data to feed the market.
Sam Tashima has a knack for finding solutions to such issues, oftentimes expertly deploying a captive company to do the trick.
The risk manager of a large startup for which the challenges of relative youth are compounded by its operating in a politically sensitive environment, said that Tashima deployed Aon’s analytics capabilities to complement the information that the company had to apply for the creation of its first captive.
“Complete data is still hard for us to get because we just have not invested a ton in that,” said the risk manager.
“Sam was able to use his expertise and some of the data that we had to better explain the models, redo some of our assumptions, and help us put together a better application,” they said.
The company will transfer risks like general liability, workers’ comp and medical stop loss via the captive, mitigating the fact that historical loss data remains scarce.
“Even though we, as a tech company, do not have a lot of experience with general liability, we still have to forecast losses and put an assumption out there that is reasonable. Sam did a good job on that,” the risk manager said.
