When an insurer canceled coverage for the Rusted Gate Farm in Central Point, Oregon, in early 2022, the nonprofit’s executive director was stressed.

“It was nail-biting for me,” said the director, Jo Ann Shannon.  At the recommendation of one of its funders, the nonprofit brought in Brenda Weaver.

She jumped in to help insurers understand the unique structure of Rusted Gate, which is both a working farm and a nonprofit focused on science research and education.

Carriers focused on nonprofits didn’t understand the farming side, while carriers focused on farms and ranches balked at the potential mix of people and farming equipment that came with the farm’s nonprofit mission.

“Bridging the two, from my perspective as a client, was the challenge,” Shannon said.

Weaver rose to meet it. “She was tenacious, shook every tree, and kept me informed and positive … Her commitment was unwavering, and I will always be grateful for her work.”

Clients also appreciate Weaver’s extensive knowledge of the farm and ranch space. She helped one client insure a horse farm and ranch in Florida during and after construction. No single carrier wanted to cover the project, the client said. Weaver ended up patching together coverage from several sources.

“This was a pretty complex matter, and she was on top of it,” said the client, who added that Weaver also saved him money through her understanding of the details. She worked with a lender, for example, to hold off on the need to buy flood insurance.
