Ann Chai Champions Inclusion and Growth as Zurich North America’s Chief Risk Officer
The road to meaningful diversity and inclusion in insurance is a long one, but Zurich’s Ann Chai is passionate about the goal.
“As someone with a deeply curious nature, I find a great deal of satisfaction in having a career in the insurance industry. It’s an exciting industry that offers visibility into the needs and challenges of so many industries. It also offers opportunities to build relationships and continually broaden my perspective,” she said.
“I’m also passionate about driving momentum for diverse talent in the industry, developing the next generation of talent and building a culture of inclusion. What we do right now plants the seeds that will enable progress. I’m a fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and I serve on the board of the Abacus Actuaries, an organization that seeks to further the career advancement of Asian actuaries and foster a sense of belonging among actuaries in the insurance industry.”
Being someone who is female and of Asian ancestry gives her a double-edged perspective on the issue.
“As someone who has often been the only female in the room, I feel strongly about inclusion and the advancement of women in the industry. Insurance has a long way to go in terms of elevating female leaders, and an even longer way to go at the intersection of insurance and finance. I’m working to drive change as executive sponsor of Zurich’s Women’s Innovation Network (WIN) employee resource group and as a member of Zurich’s Executive Women’s Alliance, a group of Zurich’s highest-level female leaders that is working to increase female representation on the executive committee and at the board leadership level,” she reports.
“To me, it’s not only about representation, but also about inclusion at every step of the way. When you are such a small cohort, it’s so important to bring along others as part of your journey and leverage relationships with allies to build more inclusion in our teams. In her job function, she wants she and her team to be the place colleagues can come for answers, not obstacles.
“Integrating risk management into business operations can be a challenge in large organizations,” she said. “As CRO at Zurich North America, I’m focusing on impact over process. Our risk team is working to dispel the misconception that risk management holds back business execution. We are a risk-taking business and risk-mitigation business. The risk function needs to enable delivery of growth and performance, so it’s incumbent on our team to understand the risks that we implicitly and explicitly take on every day,” Chai said.
“We also ensure our targets are aligned with the actual business operations. When it comes to business partnering, to drive results, you have to understand the specificity of the business needs. I challenge my team to look broadly across the organization to address potential systemic risks and find opportunities to enable business units to be successful.” &
