The 2026 Executives to Watch: QBE North America’s Todd Greeley
QBE’s Todd Greeley is no stranger to tackling complex risks. Across his more than two decades in insurance, he’s worked in financial lines, aviation and cyber claims — all fields that have had to tackle emerging exposures in recent years as technology reshapes business.
As a professional, he’s well-equipped to lead claims teams who are figuring out how to assess damages caused by novel exposures, such as those created by new digital tools like generative AI. He also knows how to leverage new technologies to prevent claims in the first place, seamlessly integrating claims and loss control strategies.
His leadership as chief claims officer for QBE North America exemplifies the forward-thinking attitude the industry needs more of to succeed in the future. It’s earned him recognition as a 2026 Risk & Insurance Executive to Watch.
From Attorney to Insurance
Greeley’s first job after graduating from Georgetown Law was not as a claims analyst but as an attorney with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. He spent six years there before transitioning to private practice and later a career in insurance, where he focused on commercial liability and financial lines.
“In many ways, what you do as a claims professional mirrors what you do as a legal analyst,” Greeley said. “A legal background trains you to think critically and anticipate risk from multiple perspectives, which is invaluable in insurance.”
Attorneys have an eye for precision and are adept at deciphering the exact intent of contract language. That’s an invaluable skill for a claims professional, especially as the commercial insurance industry grapples with whether policies cover novel exposures, like cyber risks or those posed by AI.
“Every insurance policy is a legal document,” Greeley said. “The emphasis I received as a lawyer on precision in drafting and understanding the intent behind the words you chose has been and always will be extraordinarily relevant to my work as an insurance professional. It’s shaped how I try to solve problems: methodically but with an eye toward creative solutions that are commercially practical.”
The Right Team to Tackle Complex Risks
Throughout his career, Greeley has emphasized the importance of teamwork in addressing complex and emergent risks. He encourages his claims teams to work closely with underwriters, customers and brokers, creating “a naturally collaborative culture where people feel respected, understand how their work connects to the broader mission and know that their contributions matter to our ability to achieve our business goals,” Greeley said.
He looks to build teams that have strong technical skills, but also a deep curiosity about the industry.
“I empower them to do their best work which includes giving them the space to take risks and fail, so we can learn and grow from our decisions,” Greeley said.
Looking ahead, his eye is on how tools like generative AI can empower claims professionals to work smarter, not harder, automating several tasks so that they can make better, quicker decisions on a claim.
“At the heart of our strategy is the belief that our greatest asset is our people,” Greeley said. “Our goal is to use what may be some of the most transformative advances in technology that we have seen in generations to empower our people to do their best work.” &
