The 2026 Executives to Watch: Arch Insurance North America’s Jason Conkin
Even given the explosive growth wholesale lines have experienced in research years, Jason Conkin’s work is impressive. As executive vice president, casualty, for Arch Insurance North America, he’s grown gross written premium from $90 million to nearly $500 million in five years.
How did he get there?
He developed an elite underwriting team, leveraged strategic partnerships with wholesale brokers and embraced technologies that can make underwriting more precise and transparent.
“He’s not satisfied with results today; he’s always looking for ways to do things better,” said Rich Stock, division president of casualty and surety, for Arch Insurance North America. “Jason is also future-focused, investing in tools that aren’t necessarily needed today, but will be critical in three to four years. In a marketplace that’s so reactionary, Jason is able to pull back and allocate time and energy to look ahead.”
A First Class Underwriting Team
When Conkin stepped into his role as executive vice president in 2019, he knew he wanted to build a team that was creative and ahead of industry trends. E&S has a reputation for being a bit reactive. The coverage is able to quickly evolve to today’s rapidly evolving risk landscape, but most insureds turn to it when they can’t find coverage in admitted markets.
“I’m also excited to offer more advanced training to early-career underwriters using market-leading tools that enhance efficiency and decision-making,” Conkin said. “This allows us to build a stronger foundation faster and prepare them for success in a rapidly evolving tech environment.”
Conkin knew his team had strong technical expertise, but he wanted to push them to the next level. As a leader, he’s emphasized using data to guide underwriting decisions and to prepare for market shifts, fueling growth in the long-term.
“We have made strong progress in leveraging data,” Conkin said. “There are still opportunities to embed it into daily underwriting workflows and use it to its fullest potential when engaging with broker partners.”
A True Partner for Brokers
Part of Conkin’s strategy for growth has involved developing a true partnership with wholesale brokers. Before the phrase ‘customer experience’ became a buzzword, Conkin saw brokercarrier relationships as more than transactions, viewing them more as partnerships. “I was immediately impressed with Jason’s ability to relate to the broker, while maintaining his integrity as an underwriter,” said Mike Brennan, president of CRC Specialty.
“He prioritizes collaboration, professionalism, and a desire for mutual success.”
One way Conkin has accomplished this is through a number of projects that prioritize effective data use to help increase transparency and build deeper broker partnerships. Brokers appreciate the transparency and it helps them when they’re prepping their submissions.
“My team and I feel strongly about building smarter, stronger, more intentional relationships that drive better business decisions,” Conkin said. “There’s limitless opportunity to ‘know your broker’ better.” &
