Following the turbulence of 2020, Save Mart Companies faced a stark reality: workers’ comp claims and associated costs were climbing at an unsustainable rate. The combination of industry-wide labor shortages and increased injury frequency exposed the limitations of the company’s traditional, reactive approach to claims management.

Director of risk management Rosie Partida’s response to this challenge was both systematic and innovative, beginning with a partnership with TPA CorVel to design and implement a comprehensive strategy centered on four core priorities: prevention, early clinical intervention, strategic claims resolution, and cross-functional collaboration.

“As a team of one, I knew I couldn’t do it alone, so I focused on building strong cross-functional relationships,” she said.

The new approach introduced rigorous accountability measures, including root cause analysis for every incident and direct training for managers from environmental health and safety consultants and brokers.

These managers learned to identify and mitigate safety risks specific to their individual store environments, creating a localized approach to prevention that acknowledged the unique challenges each location faced.

Perhaps most significantly, Partida replaced standard file reviews with collaborative roundtable discussions that brought together Save Mart’s risk management team, CorVel claims professionals, and defense counsel.

This model facilitated more strategic claim planning, accelerated litigation decisions, and streamlined settlement processes. The collaborative approach enhanced transparency and unified stakeholders around common objectives, creating more efficient resolution timelines.

Recognizing certain injury types occurred more frequently than others, Save Mart tailored its training and prevention programs to address known pain points, particularly musculoskeletal injuries and cuts. High-risk store locations received intensive safety engagement, ensuring that resources were concentrated where they could have the greatest impact.

Partida personally engaged with store leadership to ensure local execution aligned with corporate objectives, bridging gaps between safety, operations, legal, and HR. The program’s results demonstrate the power of strategic, coordinated action in workers’ comp management.

In 2024, Save Mart achieved a 25% decrease in new claims across its operations, with even more dramatic improvements at previously problematic locations. The company’s five highest-claiming locations saw claims drop by an impressive 43% compared to 2020 levels, excluding COVID-related incidents.

Specific injury categories showed substantial improvement, with sprains and strains decreasing by 40% and lacerations declining by 19%. The implementation of nurse triage processes contributed directly to maintaining productivity while reducing the need for medical care.

On the claims resolution side, the program achieved a 50% increase in settled claims and reduced the average cost per claim by 20%. Injured employees were routinely offered transitional roles aligned with their medical restrictions.

This approach helped employees remain engaged during recovery while reducing indemnity costs for the company. &
