An insurer-funded grain bin safety program has saved 15 lives since 2014, including two farmers rescued in Illinois and Minnesota on consecutive days this July, demonstrating the critical impact of partnerships between insurers, local sponsors and first responders in rural America, according to Nationwide.

The July rescues highlight the program’s expanding reach and effectiveness. In Fulton County, Illinois, the Macomb Fire Department successfully extracted a farmer trapped in corn up to their chin using specialized training received through the program, with equipment sponsored by the GROWMARK agricultural co-op.

The following day, Minnesota’s Hutchinson Fire Department deployed its grain rescue tube to save a farmer buried nearly to their neck in corn, using equipment sponsored by David Larson Insurance in 2018.

“Safety is paramount for the GROWMARK FS System,” said Karmy Kays, GROWMARK chief financial officer. “We are proud to support first responders with the equipment needed to potentially save lives.”

The Nationwide Grain Bin Safety program has awarded 450 grain rescue tubes to first responders across 36 states, representing more than $2 million in resources. With six rescues in 2024 alone, the initiative continues to demonstrate measurable results in preventing grain bin fatalities, the insurer said.

Addressing Critical Safety Gaps in Agriculture

Many rural communities lack access to grain rescue equipment, which can mean the difference between life and death when farmers become trapped in grain bins, Nationwide said.

“In 2018, David Larson Insurance helped purchase a grain rescue tube for the Hutchinson Fire Department, and Nationwide provided excellent training,” said Craig Schmeling, agent at David Larson Insurance. “We are thankful to Nationwide and their affiliates for that training and to the Hutchinson Fire fighters for their time and sacrifice. Knowing that this training and equipment helped save a life in our community is something we’re profoundly grateful for.”
