CompTalk: Standing Ovations: Getting Injured Workers Literally Back on Their Feet

Zack Craft of One Call discusses empowering injured workers by utilizing the technology available. Here's how he's seen success.

Just another claimant. Only an injured worker.

No workers’ compensation professional will utter these words and mean them at just face value. That’s because comp professionals know workers who are hurt while on the job are more than a claim filed or a series of reports; they’re people, individuals with hopes and dreams, who want to get better and get back on the job and to their lives. They just need a little help through the workers’ comp process.

Empowering injured workers and injured worker advocacy were borne from this thinking. Especially when it comes to catastrophic injuries that workers have never encountered prior and may not know the steps forward.

Zack Craft, vice president, national product leader, CarePath for One Call, and a self-proclaimed “loud and proud advocate” for empowering injured workers, tackles the topic of empowering workers with spinal cord injuries during his National Workers’ Compensation and Disability Conference (National Comp) CompTalk, now available on-demand for viewing.

In the United States, there are approximately 17,000 spinal cord injuries each year. These injuries are often due to falls from high places or car accidents. An average $300,000 to $1 million can be spent on rehabilitation in one year for one case alone. Depending on the age of the injured person, their health and the extent of their injury, it could cost upwards of $5 million for the lifetime of a spinal cord claim.

“My ultimate goal is to maximize functional independence for every injured worker and to provide support as they transition into their new way of living,” Craft said.

As Craft further noted, recovery for such injuries is not easy, and the desire to walk again often becomes less of a priority to just being able to stand independently. “The ability to stand provides an individual with an incredible psychological and emotional gratification,” he said.

In his talk, Craft will discuss the products and technologies that provide workers with spinal cord injuries the ability to stand again. From standing powered wheelchairs to FES devices, he not only discusses the functional capabilities these technologies have to offer but also the emotional and psychological support they give to injured workers.
